Wetland Easement Workshop

Delaware landowners are encouraged to attend a wetland easement workshop on March 19, at the Harrington Fire Hall, from 5 to 8 p.m. The workshop will help Delaware landowners learn more about the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Wetland Reserve Easement (WRE) program and the benefits of restoring proper wetland function in their wet woods or wet, unproductive crop fields while protecting the land from development.

“Wetlands play a vital role in both the environment and our lives,” said Elena Stewart, Easement Program Manager for NRCS – Delaware. “They provide habitat for wildlife and improve water quality. Wetlands also reduce soil loss, reduce flooding and recharge groundwater.”

NRCS offers financial incentives for landowners to restore and protect wetlands on their property. At the workshop, NRCS easement program staff will provide an overview of the WRE program including eligibility, easement types, and payment rates. WRE landowners will also be on site to share their first-hand experience with the program. Dinner will be served following the workshop and representatives will be available to answer questions after dinner.

“Through the WRE Program, NRCS can provide technical and financial assistance to restore and protect previously drained farmland or woodland. Landowners receive monetary compensation while benefitting the environment and retaining ownership of the land,” Stewart explains. “Delaware NRCS recently adjusted the payment rate which allows for easement compensation to be more competitive with current real estate prices.”

Seating is limited, attendees are encouraged to pre-register by March 8, via the link below, or call 302-856-3990, ext. 3.
